The Longing for High Ground (Revised 2026)
I occasionally feel a twinge of “digital guilt” when folks land here through a search engine. With my heart firmly planted in the Appalachian peaks but my boots currently hitting the flatlands of the Texas coast, I know I’m causing a bit of mischief for the algorithms. If you arrived here searching for the scent of North Carolina wildflowers, the red clay of a winding dirt road, or a high-country weather report, I apologize for the unintended detour.
The truth is, I am searching for those very same things every single day. I live in the “in-between”—navigating the humidity of the Gulf while keeping my eyes fixed on a future that leads back to the mountains.
Fortunately, there are several wonderful souls capturing the essence of the highlands right now. For the vibrant spring colors of northwestern North Carolina, I highly recommend keeping an eye on Marie’s Blue Ridge Blog (Marie has gone on and so has her blog} . If your heart pulls you toward the Southern Highlands, Liz’s Southern Highlands Camera captures that region beautifully. For those interested in the Tennessee mountains and the NC borderlands, Appalachian Treks is a must-read. Further north, Southwestern Virginia is expertly represented by the thoughtful perspectives found at Fragments From Floyd and Blue Ridge Muse.

In the meantime, I invite you to keep wandering back this way. While my personal gallery of the mountains is often gathered during summer pilgrimages, I bring back enough of the high country in my lens and my heart to keep the spirit alive all year long.
Someday, the view out my front window will finally match the photos in my header. Until then, thank you for sharing this journey of “Mountain Dreams” with me—even if the current coordinates say otherwise.
