Steamtown NHS to Host Winter Film Series

Scranton, Pa. – Steamtown National Historic Site, downtown Scranton, will feature special film documentaries that will be shown at the Park’s state-of-the-art digital Surround-Sound theater on select Saturdays in January, February and March 2010. All one-hour programs will start at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. and are included in the Park’s Entrance Fee.

On January 23, the Park will screen the WVIA documentary, “The Knox Mine Disaster.” The film features many first-person accounts of the January 22, 1959 tragedy that helped mark the end of deep mining in much of the Wyoming Valley.

February is Black History Month and the Park will feature the gripping and emotional documentary from AMS Pictures, “Rising From the Rails: The Story of the Pullman Porter” on February 13. Based on the best-selling book by Larry Tye, this high-definition documentary chronicles the relatively unheralded Pullman Porters, generations of African-American men who served as caretakers to wealthy white passengers on luxury trains that traversed the nation in the golden age of rail travel.

We’ll end our 2010 Winter Film Series with the newest documentary from WVIA, “The Irish: Two Nations – One Heart,” Part I, on March 20. The three-part documentary chronicles and celebrates the rich and indelible history of our region’s Irish immigrants.

The winter months offer the opportunity for visitors to explore our History, Technology and Roundhouse Museums at a relaxed pace. Tours of the former Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad Locomotive Shops, where visitors have the opportunity to observe our emphasis on long-term repairs, are also offered most days during the winter months.

Located in downtown Scranton, Pennsylvania, Steamtown National Historic Site is open daily from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. from January 3 – April 17, 2010; regular Park hours, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., resume on April 18.
