I received my New Hampshire travel newsletter in my email inbox today and thought I’d see how fall was proceeding in the state. This is what I found…
Monadnock region
The leaves are starting to change colors in the Monadnock Region along the streams and waterways. Route 12 near Keene and Swanzey is showing splotches of orange on the maples. You can see bits of color driving on Route 101 from Keene into Wilton. Pick your own apple orchards are open and should make for a fun family excursion. A good scenic drive right now is along Route 9 to see flashes of red on the swamp maples.

Dartmouth Lake Sunapee region
Leaves are just beginning to turn in the Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee region and our leaf-peepers are reporting subtle changes in color throughout the landscape. There’s nothing drastic just yet, but this area is one of the last to start changing colors during the Autumn season. As the nights become cooler, the colors will soon begin to develop. Overall, the area is holding on to the lush greens of summer.

White Mountains Region
Splashes of color are showing up in the higher hillsides of the White Mountains area, including Franconia Notch and north. Route 112, also known as the Kancamagus Highway, is showing some color near the top of the pass. Route 49 is just starting to turn and there are faint tinges of red in the swamp maples located around watery areas. Take a ride on Route 93 to see spots of yellow showing on the trees lining the interstate. Scenic drives include Route 135 from Woodsville to Littleton and Route 142 from Bethlehem to Whitefield.

Great North Woods region
Fall colors are just beginning to appear in the Great North Woods, which typically is the first part of the state to show foliage. There is a 20% color change in mountain areas with 10% color change on roadside drives. Deep reds and pale yellows dot the trees. Autumn colors are already well-established surrounding the 1st Connecticut Lake. Higher elevations and the lakes around Pittsburg are showing brighter colors, great for boating and fall foliage pictures. Scenic drives include Route 145 towards Pittsburg, and Route 26 from Colebrook to Errol.
